The Bay City Blues Concert Series: Lucky Peterson with special guest Robert Bradley
Saturday 02/03/07 8:00 PM
Lucky Peterson is the most dangerous triple threat working in the blues. Nobody would refute his reputation as one of the preeminent performers of the modern era. A searing lead guitarist, fantastic organist, and first-rate vocalist, Lucky's many talents are truly mind-boggling. On Double Dealin' (Blue Thumb), all three are prominently displayed as Peterson delivers the best record of his career!
Produced by John Porter, the album features Peterson on lead guitar, vocals, and Hammond B3 organ, backed by Johnny Lee Schell (Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal) on rhythm guitar, Jon Cleary on keyboards, Reggie McBride (Etta James) on bass guitar, Tony Braunagel on drums, Tamara Peterson on background vocals, and the Texacali Horns. "The first time I played with these guys-Schell and Braunagel-was at the Willie Dixon Foundation Gala seven or eight years ago," Peterson recalled. "John Porter was also there. They said they wanted to do a record with me and now it's happening."
The studio experience for Double Dealin' was warm and relaxed; Peterson said it was his best to date. "I love working with John Porter. He's calm, cool, and he has a way about him that's beautiful. I never recorded like that before, and I really liked it." Porter returns the compliment, saying, "Lucky Peterson is far and away the most talented and exciting blues musician of his generation. This record proves it!" Porter has also produced Taj Mahals' Phantom Blues, B.B. King's Deuces Wild, Buddy Guy's Damn Right I Got the Blues, and Jimmy Smith's Dot Com Blues among many other acclaimed recordings.
On "When My Blood Runs Cold," a slow blues he penned with his father, veteran singer/guitarist James Peterson, Lucky unleashes some expressive note bending on the guitar. He shows off his organ chops on his incendiary version of Keb' Mo's "Don't Try to Explain."
A tune particularly close to Peterson's heart is the slow number "4 Little Boys." "It's a true story: My grandmother died with my father in her arms when he was just 16 months old. She told my grandfather to take good care of the boys; not put them up for adoption," Peterson explained. "I found out about this two years ago when my father was writing the lyrics to the song. I didn't understand where his tears were coming from, but then he sat down and told me the story. I wanted the world to know about these four little boys."
In a lighter vein is the New Orleans-steeped "Doin' Bad, Feelin' Good," a funky number written by keyboardist Cleary that features Peterson's vocals moving into Dr. John/Taj Mahal territory.
"Double Dealin' dips into the soul/blues arena, which I just love," Peterson says of his latest release. "I learned soul when I started playing with Little Milton, and then I worked with Bobby Blue Bland, who showed me another type of soul." Though this new album is infused with Lucky's own special brand of "soul," by no means has he left the blues behind. It's clear from the opening song (the album's title track) to the closer ("Remember the Day") that Double Dealin' is Peterson doing what he does best: playing the blues.
Peterson is in his prime-rich in roots but performing in the present. But that's just what one would expect from an artist with Peterson's resumé; his career began when he was just a child. Growing up in Buffalo, NY, Peterson was exposed to music his whole life; his father owned The Governor's Inn, one of the area's most renowned blues clubs. Willie Dixon produced Peterson's first record when he was but five years old, the R&B hit, "1-2-3-4." This resulted in television appearances for the blues prodigy on such shows as The Tonight Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, and What's My Line. As a teenager he attended Buffalo Academy of Performing Arts before paying dues in the bands of Etta James and Otis Rush. One of the most versatile players working in the blues, Peterson has since performed with a long list of greats, including B.B. King and Albert Collins. His 1993 Verve debut I'm Ready announced the arrival of a new force in the blues, while his 1996 collaboration with the legendary Mavis Staples saw him displaying his gospel chops and influences. Peterson's previous dates also include1994's Beyond Cool, 1996's Lifetime, 1997's Move (all on Verve), and 1999's Lucky Peterson, his first for Blue Thumb Records.
In addition to establishing himself through these recordings, Peterson has made his name through his electrying live performances, which are the stuff of legend. Following the release of Double Dealin', Peterson plans to tour, making stops at the major blues festivals throughout the United States and Europe. "This is a new beginning for me because I haven't been on tour in the States in a while," Peterson explained. "This is a coming home party. That's why I wanted to make sure the guitar is smokin'."
Now living in Texas, Lucky Peterson is ready for Double Dealin' to take him, and the blues, to another level. By capturing the virtuosity, intensity, and excitement that Peterson has brought to stages all over the world, Double Dealin' will definitely become a favorite of blues fans everywhere.

Simply put, Robert Bradley’s life is the stuff of rock and roll legend. Born the blind son of an Alabama farmer, and one of 14 children, Bradley had spent a lifetime singing in churches and on the streets of Detroit before his childhood dreams of life as a soul singer finally came true.
Now 56, Bradley was in his 40s when he signed his first record deal, debuting on the RCA label with his band of white Detroit rock musicians, the Blackwater Surprise. Immediately striking a chord with fans of sweaty, heartfelt soul music, Bradley’s deep, raspy voice was—and is—very much a pure representation of who he is: It bears both the sweetness of his country roots and the grit of the Detroit sidewalks where he made his living for more than a decade. It beautifully blends his loves for everyone from Chuck Willis and Otis Redding to the Rolling Stones and Fats Domino.

Ryan DeHues, “America’s Next Great Crooner”, saw the worldwide release of his first CD in June of 2001. Featuring a 17-piece Big Band and a duet with Debby Boone, his CD debuted on more than 400 radio stations nationwide. All the songs for the album were carefully selected and arranged for their classic sound by David Diggs and Dave Siebels, producers of the album. They both agree Ryan is wise beyond his years and his knack for “crooning” compliments the song selections very well. Ryan exercises his vocal prowess on songs ranging from beautiful Ballads to Contemporary Pop to Big Band Jazz making this album a classic for many years to come; an incredible feat for the spirited newcomer that he is. It’s been said that, ”My Dream Come True” is timeless music, being sung by a young man who’s time has come.

In September 2005 singer/songwriter/guitarist Christine Lavin's latest CD, folkZinger, on Appleseed Records was released. This now brings her number of solo albums to 17, joining three Four Bitchin’ Babes disks, and six compilations she produced showcasing the works of dozens of contemporary singer/songwriters whose music she loves. She sings on the latest album by Noel Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul & Mary), Virtual Party, the closing track, Let's Go To The Stars. She has won one NAIRD award, two New York Music Awards, five ASCAP composer awards, the Kate Wolf Memorial Award, and her songs have been performed by such diverse artists as Tony Award-winning actress (star of Thoroughly Modern Millie and Little Women) Sutton Foster, the Dartmouth College Decibelles,The Accidentals, and the Washington D.C. Gay Men’s Chorus. In 2001 Backstage Magazine named her Outstanding New York Singer/Songwriter Of The Year.
Christine’s song Sensitive New Age Guys is part of Joan Micklin Silver’s Off-Broadway production of A. . . My Name Will Always Be Alice. Her song Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind is in the touring show Sex: The Musical.
Her song Amoeba Hop has been turned into a children's book (Puddlejumppress.com) with delightful (and scientifically accurate) illustrations by artist Betsy Franco Feeney. The book has received the stamp of approval of The International Society of Protistologists, and won a Best Book Award by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In the fall of 2004 Rounder Records reissued an updated version of the very first compilation Christine produced, On A Winter's Night, a collection that now includes, besides the original 15 songwriters, Judy Collins, Dave Van Ronk, Annie Bauerlein & Chip Mergott, Lynn Miles, Kenny White, and Cliff Eberhardt.
Christine’s concert career continues to take her all over the U.S., Canada, and points beyond. She now performs wireless, enabling her, as she says, to turn any size concert hall into a living room. When not performing or recording, Christine writes freelance (The Washington Post, Delta SKY Magazine, The Performing Songwriter Magazine, The St. Petersburgh Times) is the occasional guest host for the popular Sunday Breakfast radio program on WFUV, 90.7 FM in New York City, and now also on xm satellite radio (channel 15), The Village (go to xmradio.com for program schedules). In between all this, she knits.
Christine is currently assembling a compilation album of all food songs called One Meat Ball. The CD booklet will be a tiny cookbook. Look for that to be released in 2006 or 2007.

Country Music Star Craig Morgan with special guest Delana Stevens & Lisa Dames
Thursday 03/15/07 7:00 PM & 9:30 PM
Some singers try to change the world, one issue at a time. Others break hearts, or pack the dance floor, or pose as rebels and outlaws through their songs.
Craig Morgan, though, has set a higher goal for himself.
On My Kind of Livin', his third album and second full-length project for Broken Bow Records, he moves further up the path he's chosen to follow as an observer of the small, meaningful things in our everyday lives.
The child who deals with the loss of his beloved dog on Lotta Man (In That Little Boy), the old farmer and his wife who rediscover their love on Rain for the Roses, the friends torn apart by tragedy on Cowboy and Clown -- all the images on My Kind of Livin' draw power from the poetry that surrounds us all in everyday America.

Attitudes are contagious. The Power of One demonstrates the power of positive and negative attitudes, and how students can use their leadership to keep attitudes positive and productive. This includes practical points on ways of staying healthy in high-pressured situations. It's crucial for you as a leader to take care of yourself, because "you can't give what you don't have!"
This dynamic session reminds student leaders of why we continue to reach out to other students and the community while striving for new goals. When you as a leader get pressured from all sides, where do you go to find the strength to continue? Maybe you'll find some in this presentation.
The Power of One Workshop Objectives:
Learn to lighten up: everyone else will, too
The powerful impact of humor
The power of the verbal and non-verbal cues you communicate as a leader
Self care: why it is critical

The Bay City Blues Concert Series: Larry McCray with special guest Three Penny Revue
Saturday 03/31/07 8:00 PM
McCray, the second youngest of nine children, was raised on a small farm in Magnolia, Arkansas (thus the name of his new record label). His father played the blues on harmonica and guitar, and his older sister Clara was a guitarist and disciple of Freddie King. The family had records by John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed and Muddy Waters, among others. McCray cites the musical influence of the three blues Kings - B.B., Albert and Freddie - on his guitar playing, as well as Albert Collins, Elmore James and Magic Sam.
In the early 1970s, McCray and his family moved to Saginaw, Michigan where he took a job at a General Motors plant while finishing school, Clara taught him some guitar fundamentals, and showed him how to play blues classics like Muddy Waters "Got My Mojo Working" and Freddie King's "Hideaway," He also turned to records for inspiration, especially the popular soul music of the time, such as Gladys Knight and the Pips, Ike and Tina Turner, James Brown, Little Milton, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles, plus the omnipresent Motown sound. Over the next decade, he worked on the GM assembly line during the day, and performed with local blues, rock, country, and jazz-fusion groups at night.

Janiva Magness
Los Angeles based Janiva Magness is one of today's most talented and recognized blues and roots vocalists. A three-decade darling of the blues genre, Janiva's vocal prowess and performance is the best of the genre. In May 2006 she beat out contemporaries Susan Tedeschi, Shemekia Copeland and Marcia Ball to win the 2006 Blues Music Award for 'Contemporary Female Artist of the Year.'
Billboard writes Magness carves out a niche by singing the blues with maturity and sophistication. Singer Magazine writes her voice is sultry, smoky and strong with jazz, blues, and soul textures enveloping it.
Although her vocals are at times beautiful, this 49 year-old grandmother is best known for her sauciness and the bold, brazen beauty of her recordings and performances. In the liner notes of the new record Janiva pays homage to controversial and rule breaking women before her like Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith for fearlessly embracing their age, their sexuality, and truth.
Janiva was barely a teenager when she was consumed by the power and expression of rhythm and blues from the radio stations of her hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Janiva's influences include Etta James, Billie Holiday, Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Aretha Franklin, Jackie Wilson, Memphis Minnie & Koko Taylor - some of whom she has since shared stages with and drawn comparisons.

Debbie Davies
Born in 1952 in Los Angeles, CA, Debbie Davies was exposed to the music scene at an early age through her musician parents (her father wrote arrangements for Ray Charles and made sessions with such industry heavyweights as Frank Sinatra and Pearl Bailey). She came up playing in blues and rock 'n' roll bands in the San Francisco Bay Area before returning to Los Angeles in 1984 and landing the lead guitar spot a year later in Maggie Mayall and the Cadillacs, an all female R&B band led by the wife of British blues pioneer John Mayall (Debbie later performed on John Mayall's 1990 album A Sense of Place). In 1988, she was drafted into Albert Collins & the Icebreakers and for the next three years was featured guitarist, performing night after night behind one of the most innovative blues legends of all time. She appeared on Collins' 1991 Grammy-nominated self-titled release for Point Blank/Virgin Records.
In the summer of 1991, Davies became lead guitarist for Fingers Taylor and the Ladyfinger Revue, which served as the opening act on Jimmy Buffett's Outpost tour. In September of that same year, she formed her own band and in 1993, she came out with her solo debut release, Picture This.
Davies stuck closely to a blues format on her follow-up album, 1994's Loose Tonight, but began to broaden her range on her 1997 release, I've Got That Feeling. She branched out stylistically on her 1998 release Round Every Corner, then returned to the aggressive guitar player mode on 1999's Tales from the Austin Motel.
In 2001, Davies returned home to her regular working band of drummer Don Castagno and bassist Alan J. Hager on Love the Game. All I Found, Davies' Telarc debut, is set for June 2005. Her eighth outing as front woman finds the guitarist/singer/songwriter at the top of her game on an album of all-original material crafted by Davies and songwriting partner Don Costagno.

One of the earliest of British blues bands, Savoy Brown (with founder guitarist and longtime member Kim Simmonds at the helm) helped launch the UK blues/rock movement that paved the way for such acts as Led Zeppellin.
Back in the 1980s The Burdons were pioneers of the original music scene, mixing jubilant and infectious songwriting about teenage angst and passion with shimmering four part harmonies. Soulful songs punctuated with passionate vocals over a blend of pop, rock, and blues styles. The sound of The Burdons is more of an attitude - an unabashed joy for the purity, innocence and discovery of up-tempo tunes marked by tight ensemble interplay and all variety of fun.
A classic community band founded in 1977, this group of talented musicians has been proudly entertaining audiences with a wonderful mix of classical and modern music year-round.

Patrick grew up in Bay City, Michigan where he began playing the guitar and trumpet at age 6. Sticking with the guitar, he began to play clubs at the ripe age of 14. He toured with a fusion jazz group "Clockwork" in the late 70's before returning to school to study music.
Since moving to San Diego in 1982 he has established himself as a session musician and live performer in L.A. and San Diego. He has performed with Carl Evans Jr. of Fattburger, J. Michael Verta, Greg Vail, and a host of other top musicians and vocalists in the southern California region.
His music can be heard on the radio, television, and the worldwide Muzak Corporation. He has been nominated as one of San Diego's top jazz musicians. Patrick's 1998 release, "A Lasting Embrace" has been heard internationally. One of the tracks off that release made it on to a 'best of' smooth jazz release in Europe entitled "The Soul of Smooth Jazz vol.2". This release can be ordered through Tower Records or the UK site "Jazzfm.com".
Patrick's music can be found right alongside Boney James, Bobby Caldwell, Richard Elliot, and other big names in the contemporary and smooth jazz genre on this 1999 release. Four post-moderns playing raucus dance music, pop-inspired arrangements of folksongs, and lots of free-spirited step-dancing. Budd Greenman, Nellie Schrantz, Nic Gareiss, and Bill Wiegandt all grew up in mid-Michigan. There, nurtured by the musicians in the local old-time and Celtic music circles, they began to absorb the traditions associated with fiddle music and percussive dancing. Bill learned folksongs from his father, Budd traveled with his mother to fiddle jamborees, Nic learned his first dance steps by watching his parents in their kitchen, and Nellie attended Irish sessions and feisanna. As FRESHWATER, their mission is to use the music they love to connect with people of all ages and especially to bridge the age gap that often separates young people from traditional music.

The Plot: 1960's in a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Anatomy of a Murder is a riveting courtroom drama. “Defeated for re-election after serving six years as District Attorney of Iron Cliffs County, Paul Biegler is dispirited at the prospect of having to establish himself as a defense attorney. But the first case that comes his way is a sensational one: he takes the defense of an army lieutenant accused of the cold-blooded murder of a bartender who had allegedly raped the lieutenant’s wife. Biegler’s handling of the case is complicated by the intense dislike he develops for his client, as well as by the distractions provided by the lieutenant’s seductively attractive wife. … It is a see-saw battle all the way, one dramatic courtroom confrontation following another, as Biegler uses every device available to him in evidence and in law to save the lieutenant’s neck. Victory or defeat? The irony is that there’s a measure of both. …”

Back of the Moon are a traditional Scottish folk band, with both new and traditional tunes and songs cast in fresh modern sounding arrangements. Since forming in 2000, the band have rapidly gained a reputation for their dynamic live performances, touring annually throughout the UK, Canada, USA and eight different European Countries. Back of the Moon create their giant acoustic sound through a tightly woven frontline of Scottish border pipes and fiddle, an intimate pairing of low whistle and flute, the distinctive rhythmic force of their guitar/piano rhythm combo, at times augmented by bodhran and Cape Breton Stepdancing, and awesome three-part vocal harmonies in their Scottish songs - in which each unique singer takes the lead. 2005 saw them win Best Folk Band at the Scottish Trad Music Awards, having received Best Up and Coming Act at the awards back in 2003 and Best Celtic Group at Lorient Interceltic Festival 2003.

The Bijou Orchestra Presents: This is Opera? A Very Special Kind of Opera Night at the State Theatre $30, $25 & $20 AD, $10 ST
The world of opera is the subject of the next concert in the fifth season of The Bijou Orchestra in Bay City, Michigan. This is Opera? “If you love opera, you’ll want to hear this concert,” explains Bijou Artistic Director Leo Najar. “On the other hand, if you can’t stand opera, you really can’t miss this concert. The opera world gives us an immense range of musical styles, emotions and qualities, from the sublime to the ridiculous, which makes it the perfect subject for The Bijou. Our players will be pushing themselves to their very limits to in virtuoso showpieces like William Tell Overture, the overture to Russlan and Ludmilla and The Ride of the Valkyries. These are all popular audience favorites, but even if you think you know them, you haven’t lived until you’ve watched thirteen players perform music intended for an orchestra of over a hundred musicians.”
Soprano Diane Penning joins The Bijou to perform several selections presented collectively as “The Seven Deadly Sins.” Penning made her debut with The Bijou in November, 2007 to tremendous response and returns to sing the Jewel Song from Faust, Quando m’en vo from La Bohémè, “Glitter and Be Gay” from Candide, and other songs by Mozart, Gershwin and Herbert. Penning is a frequent performer in recital and orchestral concerts throughout the Midwest.
“Of course, much of the greatest music for the opera is sung by men, not women, but as you can see, we have no male soloist on the concert. You can trust us, however, to solve this problem in our own unique way,” promises conductor Najar.
The Bijou Orchestra takes its name from the Bijou Theater, one of the earliest Bay City theaters, which later became known as the Bay and eventually the State. The ensemble is composed of thirteen outstanding musicians drawn from Michigan and beyond to perform in this challenging medium in which every player is a soloist.

Peter Madcat Ruth and Shari Kane joined forces in 1990 to form the duo Madcat & Kane. Having traded records and tapes for over ten years, they knew they shared a love for blues that crossed the lines between electric and acoustic, delta and Chicago, jump blues, folk blues, and jazz.
Madcat's music has been evolving for over 35 years. It started in the Chicago area in the early 1960's, with Madcat playing folk/blues on guitar and harmonica. By the late 60's he had immersed himself in the Chicago Blues and was studying harmonica with Big Walter Horton. In the early 70's Madcat moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he was a key presence in two of Ann Arbor's finest progressive rock bands: New Heavenly Blue and Sky King. By the mid 70's Madcat was touring the world with jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. In the 80's, Madcat went solo infusing the folk/blues tradition with elements of rock and jazz. Performance Magazine refers to Peter Madcat Ruth as A harmonica virtuoso who is rapidly approaching legend status.
Considered one of the country's most versatile blues guitarists, Shari Kane can take an audience from her raw interpretations of Delta Blues to an up-town Chicago groove with style and ease. Shari Kane started playing guitar at the age of five. By the early 1970's she had become a devoted blues fan, and learned how to play fingerstyle blues on the acoustic guitar. When she was sixteen, she began teaching guitar. She continues to teach, offering workshops in many of the cities where Madcat & Kane perform. Shari's many years spent studying the work of the Delta Blues masters can be heard nightly as she picks up her acoustic guitar. Throwing herself into a stinging Robert Johnson interpretation, a jumping Robert Junior Lockwood shuffle, or the intricate fingerstylings of Reverend Gary Davis and Mississippi John Hurt, Shari's mastery of the acoustic tradition is apparent.

The Plot: Flight attendant George Noonan, father of five girls, needs a vasectomy. That’s the basic idea, but how George finally comes to terms with following through with the plan is the plot of this comedy. His routine visits to the female urologist “become psychotherapy sessions about life, the insignificance of modern-day man, and the vast differences between stewards and stewardesses.” Because he makes many trips to the doctor before he finally follows through, his wife suspects he’s having an affair with his urologist. Is it significant that it’s a female doctor who will do the cutting? This comedy “bristles with satirical darts, mile-a-minute entrances and exits and madcap surrealism.” The play moves back and forth in time.

The Plot: This is a comic drama that explores a mother-daughter relationship that is both maddeningly funny and touching. It’s a “rocky ride between laughter and tears.” Roberta’s mother is the mother from hell. Izzy (Isabelle) is refined in appearance but generally acerbic and dismissive, especially around Roberta. Her father, whose birthday they try to celebrate in the first act, is a gentle soul who is used to letting his wife run the show. Roberta’s husband, Zachery, and her best friend, Leslie, are easy-going. Roberta is high-strung and emotionally guarded, no surprise with a mother like Izzy who always knows what’s best for everyone and whose opinions are always the correct ones. We see a little of Izzy in Roberta’s treatment of Zach. The barriers between mother and daughter break down in the second act when Izzy decides to stay with Roberta for a while after the death of Arthur. By the end of the play we are sure that Izzy and Roberta will treat each other with respect and that her love for Zach, which had been questionable at one point, is real.

With All Due Respect, The Irish Sessions Fans have been waiting long and impatiently for the Young Dubliners take on the great songs born of Ireland and finally, they will be rewarded by 429 Records' release of WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, THE IRISH SESSIONS. Keith Roberts and his raucous band of Irish transplants and local Los Angeles musicians locked themselves away in the studio for seventeen days at the end of 2006 to focus on creating a definitive shout out to the masters of Irish song past and present. Roberts refers to the song selection as the best of the best representing poets, playwrights and vagabonds, Indeed, centuries old traditional melodies shimmer bookended by distinctive romps through the songcraft of Shane McGowan which brush up against the wistfully sad lyrics of Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh.
The Irish Sessions is nothing if not a labor of love for the Young Dubliners. What was once a project that seemed to take forever to come to fruition ironically came together in a rapid fire recording session. Great thing too as the album retains a remarkably raw live feel. Although better known for their brand of hard hitting original Celtic rock music, reinterpreting the work of other Irish songwriters takes the band to passionate new heights. The songs evoke deep emotions that burst through the organic production. Produced by Tim Boland and mixed by Ken Sluiter, Sessions remains poignant while unearthing the rocking soul found in the traditional and the modern.
Says Dubliners irrepressible lead singer/founder Keith Roberts of the overwhelming demand for an album of Irish covers: They asked for it, so we gave it to them! And had a lot of fun along the way.

Plot: This comedy follows the intersecting paths of two bumbling duck hunters, a depressed tabloid journalist, his reluctant photographer, their crazed boss, a shopgirl at a local Gasmart, a half-man/half-alligator, and a “ghost” (a woman in white). The title suggests a tabloid headline. The duck hunters believe that they have shot an angel. They have a wing to prove it. If an angel were shot down, then all the tabloids would want the story. We follow one such journalist and his photographer in their quest. That provides the outer workings of the plot. The themes of redemption, race, media, and North vs. South are all explored in hilarious fashion. After exploiting some stereotypes of the South, we are left with the assumption that simple folks are closer to God and a suggestion that “over-thinking” may cause your path in life to go wrong.

This band swings...hard or soft, fast or slow...They come out swingin' at the bell and don't stop.
In the early 1930's, America was blessed with a heyday of small-band jazz, the likes of which it has not seen since. In ballrooms across North America, hot jazz, laced with exciting improvisation, and ballads, melancholy and blue, told stories of joy and tragedy, and provided rhythm for the feet of dancers of the two-step, the Lindy and the Swing...Ray Kamalay and his Red Hot Peppers are reminiscent of this peculiar era. With some of the finest players in the United States, they play this music with all its excitement and sentiment. They have wowwed audiences at some of the very finest venues, including Interlochen, Edinburghand the Philadelphia Folk Festival.

Rhea Miller Concert Series Presents: Javier Calderon, guitar

This live concert consists of high-energy, a cappella arrangements from popular musical artists like The Temptations, The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Bob Marley, Sugar Ray, Garth Brooks, and even Aretha Franklin, and several of the group's own original songs. Having fun is universal- it is not ruled by a target demographic, claims 3MT group member Mark Stiles. "We just want everyone to come and have a good time at our shows- it is just simply music that people know and love, and we just hope that we creatively present it in a way they have never heard it done before."
Comedy is a major part of the presentation as well, when audiences are first greeted by the group at the top of the show. The Three Men all stand over 6 feet 4 inches tall, and The Tenor is 5 feet tall. The short joke lends itself to being a very playful part of how the guys interact with each other and their audiences throughout the show.
Three Men and a Tenor was created in 1992 when Paul Felch, Chuck Colby, Mark Stiles, and Glenn Williams, The Tenor, were in the Men's Glee Club at Michigan State University. The four original, founding members, hand picked each other out of a room of 60-members, to sing one song in a glee club concert, and they have been together ever since. No musical audition ever took place- it was merely a sight gag, that became a wonderful, 13-year international touring music career together. With 6 CDs and a PBS-DVD to its name, 3MT has come a long way.

Plot: The musical story of the Titanic disaster recreates the joys, hopes, courage and spirit of the passengers and crew. It examines the causes, conditions, and the characters involved in this 1912 real-life drama. The dreams and aspirations of key characters are presented in songs. This is the factual story of that ship – of her officers, crew, and passengers, to be sure – but she will not, as has happened so many times before, serve as merely the background against which fictional narratives are recounted. The central character of our TITANIC is the TITANIC herself.

Josh Gracin's life overflows with extraordinary, character-building stories. But first and foremost, he's well known because he's an undeniably talented singer and entertainer. So, here are the facts that matter most: He's one of only two new country artists in recent times to release a debut album with three Top 5 country hits (including the No. 1 hit "Nothin' to Lose"). He's also one of only two new male country singers to be introduced in the last two years to earn a gold album, and Gracin's self-titled debut is quickly edging in on platinum status.

Ryan DeHues, America’s Next Great Crooner, saw the worldwide release of his first CD in June of 2001. Featuring a 17-piece Big Band and a duet with Debby Boone, his CD debuted on more than 400 radio stations nationwide. All the songs for the album were carefully selected and arranged for their classic sound by David Diggs and Dave Siebels, producers of the album. They both agree Ryan is wise beyond his years and his knack for crooning compliments the song selections very well. Ryan exercises his vocal prowess on songs ranging from beautiful Ballads to Contemporary Pop to Big Band Jazz making this album a classic for many years to come; an incredible feat for the spirited newcomer that he is. It’s been said that My Dream Come True is timeless music being sung by a young man who’s time has come.

The Bijou Orchestra will try something it has never attempted before when it presents Die Fledermaus (The Bat) in English on November 8 at 8pm and November 9 at 2pm at the State Theatre in Bay City,
“Die Fledermaus is one of the most popular opera house presentations in the world, ” says Bijou Artistic Director Leo Najar. “Even though it is technically an operetta, not an opera, which means part of the story is spoken rather than sung, it remains a favorite among the lovers of La Bohémè, Carmen, and all the other top-ten opera favorites. It’s easy to understand why. The music is delightful—cheerful, tuneful and above all memorable. I can’t imagine anybody walking out of a good performance of Fledermaus who isn’t humming at least one of Strauss’ great melodies. It is full of some of Strauss’ best waltz music, as well as bubbling polkas and even some exotic music like a Hungarian Czardas.”
Anybody who has been to the historic State Theatre in downtown
The English treatment of the story has been written by Najar and is somewhat based upon a treatment by Craig Richard Nelson, who’s translation Najar used when presenting Fledermaus with the Saginaw Bay Orchestra in 1994. The setting has the advantage of being more modern in its language than traditional versions, plus it uses the character of Orlovsky as a narrator to clarify parts of the story that aren’t always clear no matter how carefully one designs a production.
Since music is the key to this show, rather than the acting or the dancing, it was vitally important to engage fine singers who would also be comfortable creating a production in the slightly zany manner of other Bijou productions. Soprano Sarah Hibbard (Rosalinda) has sung with the Santa Fe Opera, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and the

A haunting tale of adventure and dreams, Peter Pan has thrilled audiences around the world since it premiered on a London stage 100 years ago. But J.M. Barrie's classic story of the boy who wouldn't grown up and the girl whose family insists that she must, has never been fully realized on screen. Until now. Universal Pictures, Columbia Pictures and Revolution Studios are proud to present the first live action feature film version of Peter Pan since the silent era. And for the first time, a boy, Jeremy Sumpter, stars in the title role opposite Jason Isaacs as Captain James Hook. In stifling Edwardian London, Wendy Darling mesmerizes her brothers nightly with bedtime tales of swordplay, swashbuckling and the fearsome Hook. But the children become the heroes of an even greater story when Peter Pan flies into their nursery one night and leads them over moonlit rooftops through a galaxy of stars to the lush jungles of Neverland. Wendy and her brothers join Peter and the Lost Boys in an exhilarating life free of grown-up rules, while also facing the inevitable showdown with Hook and his bloodthirst pirates.

Massive success and its aftermath have sent many artists into oblivion, forever trying to recapture the moment when the world first bowed at their feet. That moment came for Brian Vander Ark when, as the lead singer and principal songwriter for The Verve Pipe, he sold more that 3 million albums worldwide and produced a string of hit singles, including the #1 song 'The Freshman.'
More than just the frontman, Vander Ark was its literal and figurative voice, providing the creative spark, and writing songs that gave the band its devoted following. Although the songs were cast in the style of the era, they remain singular and special. His gift is one of tremendous storytelling clarity expressed through melodies and rhythms that are unique, riveting, intensely personal and entirely gripping.
Rather than blindly attempt to reclaim a throne that was fleeting at best, the Michigan native struck out on his own, sold all his possessions, hit the road and released his acclaimed debut solo CD, Resurrection, in 2005. This inspired collection of original songs recalls an era when artists were not afraid to express their heart's direction and soul's design. Vander Ark continues that commitment with the release of his latest solo CD, Angel, Put Your Face On. Both earnest and reflective, this music once again takes an intimate look at life while exploring themes of family, love and loss. His journey has resulted in a lyrical, engrossing collection of songs wrought from an experience that many have dreamed of but few have faced. On the way, Brian rediscovered his love for performing and now revels in a freedom that few can claim as he travels the road playing his songs and connecting with audiences.

A Michigan-native, Daniels never forgets his roots. The rowdy rendition of "Detroit Train" with guest artist Alto Reed, saxophonist with Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band, is a fun, energetic, rock and roll tribute to the city that bears its name. On Live and Unplugged, "The Lifelong Tiger Fan Blues" was a lament to the team with the second worst season in baseball history. On Grandfather's Hat, his second CD, Jeff had the rare opportunity to rewrite the lyrics ("The Lifelong Tiger Fan Blues, Revisited") as an ode to the almost-World-Series-Champion team, reinforcing again his love of all things Michigan.
Fans of Jeff's popular original stage play and independent feature film, Escanaba in da Moonlight, have eagerly awaited the musical tribute to the subject, and he delivers, with "The Ballad of the Buckless Yooper". Teaming up with the energetic foursome Steppin' In It, he spins the folk tale of Ruben Soady, the only man in Michigan's Upper Peninsula never to bag a buck.
Grandfather's Hat is an evolution of a career in motion. What started out as a means of raising money for the equity theatre he founded (The Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea, Michigan) has become a back road journey that taps into the storyteller's head. But now it has a melody, as well as a story to tell. And if you happen to find your foot tapping along, then that would be just fine.

Diego Rivera has been called, 'A bright, new voice on the saxophone.' In 1999, Rivera toured nationally with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra for their Big Band '99 U.S. tour. Rivera has also toured with internationally renowned bassist, Rodney Whitaker, former member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Rivera has performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival, Art Tatum Toledo Jazz Festival, Idlewild Jazz Festival and Lansing Jazz Festival. In 2002, Rivera accepted a position as Instructor of Jazz Saxophone and Improvisation at Michigan State University. His commitment to the education of young jazz musicians resulted in his appointment as Associate Conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Civic Jazz Ensembles. As the Harper's house band in East Lansing, MI for almost three years, the Diego Rivera Quartet was able to develop their sound, which has won them critical acclaim having been recongnized as one of the 'best local jazz acts' in the Lansing area by the Lansing State Journal. An avid composer and arranger, Rivera has written arrangements for a number of events and concerts, most notably for Jazz at Lincoln Center's 'Motor City Jazz' concert, a tribute to the music and musicians of Detroit. Rivera, Derrick Gardner, Professor of Jazz Trumpet at Michigan State University and MSU Jazz Band I under the direction of Rodney Whitaker, performed Rivera's arrangement of Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' suite in 2006 at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in New York City. In 2005 Rivera was commissioned by the Center for Great Lakes Culture to compose and premiere a Jazz Suite in honor of civil rights activist Dolores Huerta. In September of 2006, Diego Rivera was a featured artist on Delta College's television program, Somos Hispanos, a monthly news program focusing on the contributions of Latinos to the community. He currently performs in the area with his own group, The Diego Rivera Quartet, and is a member of the Professors of Jazz at MSU under the direction of Rodney Whitaker, Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University. The Diego Rivera Quartet has performed at the Lansing Jazz Festival, The Detroit Jazz Festival, and has been performer/clinicians at the Idlewild Jazz Festival in Idlewild, MI. Rivera has also performed with Jon Hendricks, Ellis Marsalis, Jimmy Cobb, The Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, The Gerald Wilson Big Band, Christian McBride, Wycliffe Gordon, Delfeayo Marsalis, Marcus Belgrave and Ali Jackson, Jr.

More than seven decades after the innovations of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, featuring guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt, combos called Hot Clubs carry on the gypsy jazz sound around the globe-in Tokyo, San Francisco, Seattle, Sweden, Norway, Austria, and many other locales. None, however, offers a fresher take on the tradition than does the Hot Club of Detroit, led by fast-fingered Reinhardt disciple Evan Perri.
Hot Club of Detroit has headlined nearly every jazz festival, club and concert hall in Southeast MI, as well as various venues throughout the Midwest. Highlighted performances have included the Detroit International Jazz Festival, the Max Fischer Music Box (Orchestra Hall, Detroit, MI), Night Town (Cleveland OH), Pete Miller's (Chicago IL), and the Madison Gypsy Jazz Festival (Madison WI).
Unlike the instrumentation of original Paris-based quintet, comprising Reinhardt, violinist Stephane Grappelli, two rhythm guitarists, and a bassist, the current Hot Club of Detroit is made of guitarist Perri, accordionist Julien Labro, soprano and tenor saxophonist Carl Cafagna, rhythm guitarist Paul Brady and bassist Shannon Wade. The fibrous accordion tones of Labro, a native of Marseilles, France, links the Detroit quintet to the French musette style from which gypsy jazz partially sprung, while Cafagna's robust saxophone work introduces bop and post-bop elements to gypsy jazz.
The son of a professional jazz guitarist, Perri was born in Detroit on June 12, 1979, and raised in nearby Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He began studying piano at age four and was giving classical recitals by the time he was five. When he was 17, his dad gave him a guitar.
Perri had been exposed to his father's straight-ahead jazz guitar playing, as well as to records by Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and Jim Hall while growing up and after taking up guitar himself, developed a fondness for Pat Martino, yet he had never heard Django Reinhardt until he enrolled at the McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minnesota, to study with Mike Elliott, a former student of jazz guitar great Johnny Smith.
Perri, who now plays a small oval-hole Del Arte acoustic guitar, formed the Hot Club of Detroit in 2003 while attending Wayne State University in Detroit. The group took first place in the 2004 Detroit International Jazz Festival competition and won the 2006 Detroit Music Awards as Outstanding Traditional Jazz Group. In 2007, the band swept the Detroit Music Awards, winning in the Outstanding Traditional Jazz Artist, Best Independent Label Recording, Outstanding National Small Independent Label Recording and Outstanding Video on a Limited Budget categories, Perri himself was named Best Jazz Instrumentalist. And, for the past five years, the quintet has hosted the annual Djangofest Detroit at various venues, including the Masonic Temple, where Reinhardt himself had appeared with Duke Ellington in 1946.
