Brokeback Mountain
Sunday 02/25/07 7:00 PM
Rated R for sexuality, nudity, language and some violence
A raw, powerful story of two young men, a Wyoming ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy, who meet in the summer of 1963 sheepherding in the harsh, high grasslands of contemporary Wyoming and form an unorthodox yet life-long bond--by turns ecstatic, bitter and conflicted.
Fans from all over the country will be attending a special screening of the movie Brokeback Mountain on Sunday, February 25, 2007 at the State Theatre in Bay City, Michigan. There will be autographed posters and original costumes from the movie on display at the theatre.
This special screening is being sponsored by John Trudell (BayCityJohn), a member of the internet group The Ultimate Brokeback Forum. This is a great opportunity to see the film on the big screen, and to meet other passionate fans of great filmmaking. It has been suggested by a number of fellow fans of the film that the 2007 Oscar telecast not be viewed in favor of watching the film that should have won the Best Picture Oscar, Brokeback Mountain.
This has already been publicized on The Ultimate Brokeback Forum, a website established by journalist Dave Cullen, and it boasts over 5,000 subscribers worldwide and contains over a half million individually posted items. Its address is http://www.davecullen.com/forum/ if you care to check out the size and scope of the site.
You may not know that members of the Forum raised over $25,000 in a matter of a few days in order to place a full-page ad in Daily Variety, March 10, 2006, five days after the Oscar debacle, thanking the creators, cast and crew of Brokeback Mountain for transforming the lives of countless people around the world through the magic and power of the best film of 2005 and proceeded to enumerate the many organizations that awarded its top honor to the film. You may view the ad at this address: http://davecullen.com/brokebackmountain/img/ad-final.jpg. The placement of this ad received national media attention and is completely unprecedented in the annals of motion picture history that any kind of full-page ad had been placed in Daily Variety after the Oscars for a film that did not win Best Picture. The ad was placed as a positive expression of support for the film rather than expressing anger at the Academy's surprising decision.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Fri. 3/2/07 10:00 PM
Sat. 3/3/07 10:00 PM
The movie starts out with Arthur, King of the Britons, looking for knights
to sit with him at Camelot. He finds many knights including Sir Galahad the
pure, Sir Lancelot the brave, the quiet Sir Bedevere, and Sir Robin the
Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir Lancelot. They do not travel on horses, but
pretend they do and have their servants bang coconuts to make the sound of
horse's hooves. Through satire of certain events in history (witch trials,
the black plague) they find Camelot but, after literally a quick song and
dance, they decide that they do not want to go there. While walking away, God
(who seems to be grumpy) comes to them from a cloud and tells them to find
the Holy Grail. They agree and begin their search. While they search for the
Grail, scenes of the knight's tales appear and why they have the name they have.
Throughout their search they meet interesting people and knights along
the way. Most of the characters die; some through a killer rabbit (which they
defeat with the holy hand grenade), others from not answering a
question right from the bridge of Death, or die some other ridiculous way.
In the end, King Arthur and Sir Bedevere are left and find the Castle
Arrrghhh where the Holy Grail is. They are met by some French soldiers
who taunted them earlier in the film, so they were not able to get into the
castle.

An Inconvenient Truth (2006)
Director Davis Guggenheim eloquently weaves the science of global warming with Al Gore's personal history and lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change. A longtime advocate for the environment, Gore presents a wide array of facts and information in a thoughtful and compelling way. Al Gore strips his presentations of politics, laying out the facts for the audience to draw their own conclusions in a charming, funny and engaging style, and by the end has everyone on the edge of their seats, gripped by his haunting message. An Inconvenient Truth is not a story of despair, but rather a rallying cry to protect the one earth we all share.
A live discussion with Pete Sinclair will follow the film. Pete is a Graphic Artist from Midland. He attended training in Nashville with Al Gore to advocate and educate the public about global warming.

Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a bit different, never caring about or fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix, Arizona high school. When her mother Renee (Sarah Clarke) remarries and decides to move with her new husband to Florida, and Bella decides to go live with her father, Charlie (Billy Burke), in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn't expect anything to change. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she's ever met. Intelligent and witty, his piercing eyes see straight into her soul. Soon, Bella and Edward are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance. Edward can run faster than any cheetah, he can stop a moving car with his bare hands, and he hasn't aged since 1918. Most importantly, he's a vampire. Like all vampires, he's immortal. He doesn't drink human blood (they're vampire "vegetarians"), which is rare among the vampire population. Instead, they go on regular "hiking" trips, where they feed on prey such as grizzly bears and mountain lions. For Edward, Bella is the thing he has waited ninety years for - a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. And what will they do when James (Cam Gigandet), Laurent (Edi Gathegi), and Victoria (Rachel Lefevre) come into town and James sets his sights on Bella? Will true love prevail when Edward is forced to save her life and conquer his thirst? The true question is, When you can live forever, what do you live for?

Muppet Christmas Carol
Brian Henson directs his father's creations in the Charles Dickens classic, the best known (and most oft-filmed) Christmas story of all time. Michael Caine plays the old miser Scrooge with Kermit as his long-suffering but ever-hopeful employee Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Cratchit's wife, and a host of Muppets (including the Great Gonzo as an unlikely Charles Dickens) taking other primary roles in this bright, playful adaptation of the somber tale. Or at least it starts brightly enough--the anarchic humor soon settles into mirthful memories and a sense of melancholy as the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future take Scrooge on a journey of his lonely, wasted life. Michael Caine makes a wonderful Scrooge, delightfully rediscovering the meaning of life as fantastic creations from Henson's Creature Shop (developed specially for this film) take the reins as the three ghosts. While the odd mix of offbeat humor and somber drama undercuts the power of Dickens's drama, this kid-friendly retelling makes an excellent family drama that adults and children alike can enjoy.

White Christmas
After leaving the Army after WWII, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis team up to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis plays matchmaker and introduces Wallace to a pair of beautiful sisters (Betty and Judy) who also have a song-and-dance act. When Betty and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to find their former commander, General Waverly, is the lodge owner. A series of romantic mix-ups ensue as the performers try to help the General.

Could this be the funniest movie ever made? By any rational measure of comedy, this medieval romp from the Monty Python troupe certainly belongs on the short list of candidates. According to Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, it's recommended for fans only, but we say hogwash to that--you could be a complete newcomer to the Python phenomenon and still find this send-up of the Arthurian legend to be wet-your-pants hilarious. It's basically a series of sketches woven together as King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail, with Graham Chapman as the King, Terry Gilliam as his simpleton sidekick Patsy, and the rest of the Python gang filling out a variety of outrageous roles.
